(from a forwarded e-mail)
For ant problems: Ants hate cucumbers. Keep the skin of cucumbers near the place or ant hole.
To get pure and clean ice: Boil water first before freezing.
To make the mirror shine: Clean with spirit.
To remove chewing gum from clothes: Keep the cloth in the freezer for an hour.
To whiten white clothes: Soak white clothes in hot water with a slice of lemon for 10 minutes.
To give shine to hair: Add one teaspoon of vinegar to hair, then wash.
To get maximum juice out of lemons: Soak lemons in hot water for an hour, then juice them.
To avoid tears while cutting onions: Chew gum.
To remove ink from clothes: Put toothpaste on the ink spots generously and let it dry completely, then wash.
To skin sweet potatoes quickly: soak in cold water immediately after boiling.
To get rid of mice or rats: Sprinkle black pepper in places where you find them. They will run away.
Did you notice how much effort or risk you do when doing these "tips"? I don't believe in these. I feel like these are only from "traditions" or "sayings" of old people - mga tipong "baka mapasma ka kung maligo ka right after sports" - but no scientific basis. You will be the guinea pig. Cucumbers for ants: you have to try to find out if it's true. Boil before freezing ice? Effort! And you don't drink ice, or only little of it. You only need to boil maybe if the water is really bad - not in the Philippines. Honestly I have a feeling this came from some country where their level of hygiene (and also water quality) is just not the same as in the modern world. Are you really gonna use "spirit" (alcoholic liquor) to clean mirror? Which one? Whisky? You know how much is liquor compared to mirror-cleaning liquid? Or to soap, which works just fine? Freeze clothes with gum? Soak clothes in lemon to whiten them? What about the lemon smell? You really wanna put vinegar to your hair??? What if you chew gum and you still shed tears while slicing onions? Soak lemons in hot water for an hour - by then, the water would've gone cold already. And who needs to squeeze the maximum juice out of lemons!??? Just squeeze them as best you can; if you can't get all the juice out, that's a fact of life. Boiling water, soaking for an hour - effort! Toothpaste for inked clothes - heard of a washing machine and detergent? "To skin sweet potatoes QUICKLY - soak in cold water immediately after BOILING" - boiling is not QUICKLY! Black pepper for rats - we'll see.
