500 Days of Summer trailer

(It has a nice soundtrack, too.)

Halloween afternoon

Snacking on Yellow Cab's Corona Chicken Salsa pizza with Ronjie before watching "500 Days of Summer". Ahh... A perfect laid-back afternoon. :)

Vigan empanada

Last weekend, Ronjie brought me to Tiendesitas (my first time there... loved the pet stores!) and introduced me to Vigan empanada. Mmm... I liked it. :) Different from the usual (Red Ribbon) empanada I was used to. Vigan empanada had a filling of grated papaya + ground meat + a whole egg! The experience was even more enjoyable because I got to watch how the empanadas were made, from 3 feet away! Fun!

Mac's Deli's Okoy is good din daw. Will try that next time. :)

In love

Mutts 090913

And then I'm reposting something which Mela posted on her Multiply blog: (bagay kasi sa comic strip)

"When you fall in love, it is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake, and then it subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the desire to mate every second of the day. It is not lying awake at night imagining that he is kissing every part of your body. No… don’t blush. I am telling you some truths. For that is just being in love; which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over, when being in love has burned away."
- Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

June 13

I spent most of yesterday at home. :D Breakfast was banana bread and green tea-milk tea. The tea tasted like nori. Hmm..

green tea-milk mix from Mimmy, from Taiwan :)

It was a pretty much activity-less day. I actually wasn't feeling well so I spent the early afternoon sleeping and reading. I finished a book! 'Stargirl' by Jerry Spinelli :) Nice, nice - I liked it. It's young adult fiction in the point of view of a high school boy.

Caught the Novo Concertante's European Tour send-off concert in the evening. They'll be going to Austria, Germany, and Spain for a couple of competitions in July. They sang some Spanish and German songs, including one of their competition pieces (dunno of any are posted on YouTube); some Filipino folk and pop love songs, arranged by various members of the group; and even a Beatles song, arranged by one of the tenors. *crossing fingers that they come home with prizes* Late dinner after at Shrimps Ahoy! in Harbor Center(?). (I had fish and chips, which I didn't enjoy. Parang may weird taste yung fish.)

Happy Sunday today! :)

Just sharing. :) Can relate eh. I feel lost sometimes (a lot of times) too.

When Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 she was asked, "What can we do to promote world peace?" Her answer: "Go home and love your family."

The Paradoxical Commandments
by Dr. Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for the underdogs anyway.

What you spend in years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

(c) Copyright Kent M. Keith 1968, renewed 2001

The above is usually misattributed to Mother Teresa, probably because she had posted (a slightly different version of) the Paradoxical Commandments on the wall of her children's home in Calcutta (akala siguro ng iba she wrote them?)... this version, I think:

(lifted off wikiquote)

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

Dr. Keith wrote the commandments in 1968 and narrates how he encountered them again in 1997, here, which leads him to decide to speak and write about them, 30 years after he first wrote them.

Dr. Keith recently came out with an 11th commandment,

The world is full of violence, injustice, starvation, disease, and environmental destruction.
Have faith anyway.

and has a new book about it. Check it out, here!

Kung Hei Fat Choi!

the dragon passed by our floor last January 26 :)

Hehe. Super late post. :D

It was my first time to witness a dragon dance. Sa office pa. Aliw. We hung ang pao envelopes from the ceiling, which the dragon "ate" one-by-one, in an order determined by a feng shui expert. (Pag kinain ng dragon yung ang pao envelope mo, swerte yon para sa'yo.)

Happy Year of the Ox! Sharing the 2009 'precautions/predictions' write-up for the Year of the Pig people (which I got from my officemate):

"Though the year of the Ox may not be a fantastic year for you, it will be better than the year of the Rat. There will be strong indications of movement. This will imply that you might be moving house, running around to get things done, travel frequently overseas or even relocating to other countries. No matter what might be the case, this is going to be a busy year for you. There might be some obstacles such as having direct conflicts with people and having to find yourself fending on your own. The good news will be that there will not be many people who will deliberately try to hinder you from your goals. Due to your tight schedule, you might neglect your health and will tend to fall ill easily. There will also be indications of being attacked by animals. You will also need to pay attention to your elders’ health and safety. Apart from neglecting your health, you might also not put in enough time to spend with your friends and family. Due to this, the bond between your friends and family might weaken and this might cause unhappiness and dissatisfaction of your behavior from your friends and family. If you are in a relationship, this will also cause tension. Your wealth luck is below average. Your expenses are high but your sources of income will not seem to increase correspondingly. You should try to maintain a low profile this year and be conservative in your approach. Pace yourself in terms of what need to be done and take breaks in between. This will enable you to prolong your stamina and not get burnt out."

Hmm... "indications of being attacked by animals"? Yikes.

Nine for 2009 -- my 2009 checklist

Lazy Saturday again. Aahhh... :) I spent time in the kitchen earlier today. I cubed some canned almond jelly for our lychee and almond jelly dessert. What do you think?

Uni-Mart in Greenhills lang yung nagbebenta ng canned almond jelly. (Got this tip from Atty. Anne, my former employer's in-house legal counsel.) You can find it the the section where the canned green jelly is sold. Otherwise, you can make some from scratch, using powdered almond jelly. Using canned saves you time though. While chopping, naalala ko bigla yung 'Ploning' (local movie starring Judy Ann Santos)... In 'Ploning', lychees were served only during special occasions... Nothing special naman about today, except maybe that I finally finished my 2009 goals/checklist. Nine for 2009. Mostly travel plans. :D Sharing:

1. Batanes. Parang Europe daw ang Batanes. Sana mag-sale na ulit ang Zest Airways.

2. Dumaguete-Siquijor. I'm booked already for Jan.30-Feb.1! Yay! Going with OH Mel. I'm thankful she's kaladkarin. We're travelling together again after 9 years, when we visited Iloilo and Guimaras in 2000. (Haha! Diarrhea memories of the Iloilo-Manila boat trip are starting to come back to me.) Asenso na kami ngayon kasi via plane na kami to Dumaguete. Dumaguete-Siquijor, anyone? You're welcome to join us. Puntahan natin yung witchcraft village sa Siquijor. :D

3. FreeCell 20,000. 'Finish all 1 million FreeCell games' is on my bucket list. I just finished game 722. According to my calculations, I have to finish around 18,500 games per year if I want to reach the 1 million mark by age 80. Let's see how far I'll be na by year-end.

4. Graduate school. Start on my MBA na, while a part of me still wants to study.

6. One hundred ten pounds!

7. Run a marathon. Nicole's tito is organizing a marathon for Tubbataha for March 22. I'm just waiting for the final details from Nicole. The shortest option is a 3k run, that's what I'm running. :D Taralets!

8. Save more.

9. Taipei. Maybe in July or August. Birthday gift to myself. I'm trying to get to know Asia, one country at a time. :)
